Breathing Easier: A Custom Modern Shed Transformed One Allergy Sufferer’s Life
Lily Oscar, residing in the rainy Pacific Northwest, sought a non-toxic sanctuary due to her health condition, CIRS. She needed a mold-free, water-damage-free space to breathe freely. Amidst COVID-19, she learned more about backyard home offices and turned to Modern Shed for her healthy sanctuary.

Lily met with our designer, Jeff Bergerson, discovering that her Modern Shed could be custom-designed, including compatible components to create a safe environment.
“I was looking for a solution that was non-toxic, non-water damaged, low EMF, and mold-free,” said Lily. She found Modern Shed to be the most impressive option among different outdoor solutions and prefab companies.
Modern Sheds are built indoors, minimizing exposure to elements like mold and toxins. Jeff and builder Dave worked closely with Lily and her family to source non-toxic materials and create her dream, non-toxic studio.
Jeff’s flexibility and communication impressed Lily’s father, Josh. The studio features unique upper transom windows that bring in considerable natural light and a natural pine ceiling liner that adds to the aesthetic of the space but is also VOC-free. All of the wood used is sourced from sustainable foresting, and the windows and doors are Washington-made, as in every Modern Shed.
Lily’s Modern Shed includes custom cork floors, non-toxic paint and glue, and the standard yet sleek and dry metal roof. When sourcing each piece of her Modern Shed, Jeff and Dave took extra steps to make sure all health and toxicity elements were considered. Dave ensured reliable subcontractors for the project and eased any concerns the Oscars had.
The entire process, from idea to installation, took less than six weeks for the 12 x 16’, 192-square-foot space, ideal for Lily’s work and living needs.
