Modern Shed

Why doesn’t Modern Shed offer online design and purchase ability?

A friend and I recently went to the local mall to shop for shoes. We hadn’t been to a brick-and-mortar store for some time. I was looking for walking shoes… but have a challenge of small feet (men’s 7 W). She was looking for two pairs of boots. First up, a large retail chain. The shoe department looked like a tornado had gone through. And not a single clerk to assist. Stop two was a large discount shoe store. No personal service was offered, and we breezed through searching on our own. No luck. Stop three was another shoe store, but we were greeted right away by a young man asking if he could help. I told him what I was looking for, he invited me to sit down. In less than five minutes, came back with four selections. We were on our way without needing to sign up for emails/promotions etc.! Thank you!

Stop four was a very large, famous national retailer. The place looked dated, and the boot selection was minimal. There were no clerks, and the person stocking items said the department was now self-service. No warm and fuzzy feeling there. Stop five was a localized store where we were greeted warmly by a young woman who answered all my friend’s questions, made great suggestions and more. She even gave us advice on where to go dancing and get lessons. She won a sale with a very happy and thrilled customer.

We are both versed in marketing and so discussed this experience over lunch and how it relates to Modern Shed.

At Modern Shed we don’t have an online design tool, nor do we offer anything to purchase online. We believe selling a building requires much more customer interaction because a structure in your backyard is your personal space and can require quite a bit of planning. We feel, the best way to provide you a product such as ours is to listen to your desires and design something around your needs.

How does this work? Our design consultations for backyard studios are free. We start with a short 15-minute call to make sure our product is a good fit for your circumstances. Next, you and our designer spend time face to face on a video call discussing items such as size, use, color, location - and dozens of things most people may never even consider. After all, our buildings aren’t a typical “shed.” They function as a home office, a small gym, a creatives’ studio, or any number of other uses.

Doing this takes construction and design knowledge, time, and most importantly, a personalized approach. Our designers may spend over a dozen hours listening and helping you assess and revise the design to your needs based on your use, location, and chosen site by reviewing the drawings we provide to you (both 2D and 3D).  This method ensures you are getting what you truly desire, which is so important when spending an amount that can be equal to or greater than the price of a car. We don’t use cookie cutter, off-the-shelf designs for our backyard studios. Each shed is designed and fabricated by professionals, specifically for each customer. There are no two Modern Sheds that are identical.

Our goal is to create a space that is special for every one of our customers for life. To schedule your introduction call, connect with your Modern Shed Design Pro today!

Between a Rock and a Hard Place

Mother Nature’s beautiful boulders go from construction challenge to unbelievably gorgeous landscape feature!

SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA – Ryan and his family knew they had the perfect spot for a home office, even though there were a couple of (not so tiny) obstacles. However, as the pandemic loomed on, their idea shifted to an urgent need. Ryan contacted Modern Shed Design Consultant Jeff Bergerson. “No other shed manufacturer wanted to touch our space because of the boulders. It wasn’t until I got an on-site inspection by Modern Shed preferred installer Dave Walterick that I felt comfortable moving forward,” said Ryan.

Simply put, Ryan, Jeff and Dave realized the standard 10’x12’ shed wouldn’t fit, i.e., “in between a rock and a hard place.” As a result, they decided that Modern Shed would tailor the shed to fit – a 9’x12’ shed. “The space is REALLY tight between the rocks and the setback rules; it is literally inches away from one of the boulders,” Ryan explained.
