As summer fades into fall and winter right behind, now is the time to ensure your yard and structures are ready to withstand the changing seasons and remain beautiful for years to come.

Preparing your lawn (or turf) for winter is one of the most important investments any homeowner can make in their enduring curb appeal. Whether you decide to take on these simple projects yourself or have a professional do the work, these are the basics that will need to be addressed:

  • Aerate and fertilize your lawn.
  • Spread grass seed and water, paying special care to sparse areas.
  • Keep your grass at a short-medium length. Tall grass attracts pests seeking places to burrow.
  • Avoid using salt to melt snow on sidewalks or driveway areas near your lawn.
  • For turf, periodically brush and remove any fallen leaves from the turf. Allow any snow to melt naturally. Debris and salt could inhibit your turf’s drainage.

Many Modern Shed owners also have beautiful hardscaping and furniture that requires basic care as we head into cooler weather:

  • Remove all debris and leaves from your decking and paved areas. Inspect decking for loose or sagging boards and popped nails, repair or replace as needed.
  • DIY or hire professionals to clean and seal your pavers and decking.
  • Use a fabric protector such as Scotchgard on fabric furniture and cushions to repel water and stains.
  • Use the appropriate sealant to protect your furniture: waterproof sealant for wood, marine varnish for wicker, and rust-resistant primer and an exterior-grade enamel paint for wrought iron furniture.
  • For areas with particularly harsh or wet winters, you may want to invest in covers for your outdoor furniture or store your furniture indoors.
  • Inspect and repair fire pits (and stock up on firewood for those cool evenings!)

Some other important winterization may be needed for your property if you own a pool or have a yard irrigation system. Many homeowners will hire a professional to perform this maintenance, or if you choose to DYI these, be sure to refer to your product’s owner's manual.

For gardeners, be sure to protect your over-winter plants and prep your beds for winter. Planters should be inspected, cleaned, and brought inside for storage.
