The Twin Studios
SACRAMENTO — There’s never too much of a good thing, especially when it comes to Modern-Shed.
That’s what Jim from Davis realized when he and his wife decided they needed more space at their rural area home and ended up with not one, not two, but three Modern-Sheds.
“Our house has three bedrooms and it’s probably 1,800 or 1,900 square feet,” Jim says. “It’s fine for the two of us, but if we had anybody over, like my son and his family, it becomes immediately kind of cramped.”
The couple’s vision for three Modern-Sheds evolved — initially, they knew they wanted a new shed for their gardening supplies and storage, but they also wanted space to work out and work on their hobbies.
“I worked out at large health club, but I haven’t gone there for a long time,” Jim says. “I was using the health club, but it’s a little drive away and there’s all these other issues, like trying to get on the right machines at the right time.”
He and his wife decided on twin studios, both 10’ by 12’, that are adjoined by a deck and overhead trellis.
One of the sheds is used as a fitness studio, while the other is a work space for Jim, who has a pilot license.
Though he is retired, Jim likes to have someplace to go to read or plan flying trips.
“I’ve always got someplace I can go out to with a computer and an office set up out there,” he says. “It’s quieter, off the beaten path. It’s a good place to get some work done.”
The couple discovered Modern-Shed from a magazine article years ago and thought it sounded like a good idea to get the space they needed without spending a lot of time on construction.
“We moved in five years ago and spent a year and a half remodeling the house,” Jim recalls. “It’s a long process and always more expensive than you think it’s going to be. Twenty years ago we had a house built and that took a couple of years. We liked the idea that a Modern-Shed would be done in a matter of weeks.”
The couple’s third Modern-Shed, a 6’ by 8’ garden shed, sits next to the twin studios a couple hundred feet from the house, separated from the house by a pool and a garden.
“They’re very attractive but not conspicuous,” Jim says. “I thought for awhile that the garden shed would not be that big, but it works really great. Everything fits in there well.”
The twin studios have James Hardie on the back side with redwood siding on the front.
The overhead trellis and the deck are also made of redwood, matching the redwood accents on the couple’s home.
The beauty of this process was that we knew exactly how big the sheds were going to be and what they were going to look like,” Jim says. “We were surprised not that they looked as good as they did, but pleasantly surprised by how really good they did look.”
