BAY AREA — As a salesman working from home, Scott knew he and his family were running out of space.
Their three-bedroom home with a small office was maxed out — each of the two kids had their own room, and Scott’s wife began to use the office for her own home business, pushing Scott and his work to the dining room table.
“We live in Northern California, so properties are typically smaller,” he said. “I was working at the kitchen table, at the dining room table, and making calls was distracting. We were maxed out, henced using the common area or Starbucks for work.”
Scott researched the prefab route online after looking into building a custom structure at first.
“I realized the cost would be cheaper doing it prefab,” he said. “I have a big backyard and I wanted to utilize that space.”
Scott selected a 10’ by 14’ Modern-Shed that was erected fairly quickly this past September.
He was impressed with the way Modern-Shed “problem-solved” for him.
“Our dealer Mike brought up some interesting pointers about how to position the shed,” Scott said. “I had an old shed that was sitting in that spot that stored some holiday boxes and clothes and other things we were just going to throw in the garage.”
Dealer Mike Probach came up with the idea to have the Modern-Shed contractors build some built-in closets in the garage as a side project, to store the boxes and clothes from the old shed.
“They solved the problem of moving the stuff I had in the shed to the garage area,” Scott said. “It was great. They were in and out in just under a week. That included doing the side project, the floors and some additional things as add-ons. It was minimally disruptive.”
Scott selected Modern-Shed because of the way the company works with clients to get them exactly what they want.
“I really liked the level of customization you could do with the size, the windows, the doors, the flooring,” he said. “It seemed like so many different things you could do. I wanted to make it my own rather than just buy the cookie-cutter type of design that I found at other shed companies.”
The fact that Modern-Shed does not use a cement foundation was also a plus, he said.
Scott recommends getting a WiFi signal extender if your shed is out of the line of sight of your wireless router, like he did.
Now, he has the space to make business calls and relax after work to watch the game.
“It’s great to just have some quiet location to go to and also the kids use it when I’m not using it,” he said. “It’s a kid room when it’s not an office, since I have a couch and TV in there. It’s multi-purpose. We call it the Man Cave/Dad’s Office. It’s a man cave after 4 p.m. and on the weekends.”
